There is also another variant that is equally powerful: children reading to younger siblings. My 8 year old read to her younger brother so often that he started reading by himself before he was two years old. (Obviously, there were some learning-intended genes in that little brain of his, but I wonder if he would have thought to pick up a book for pleasure if he had not enjoyed intimate moments with his sister spent in reading together.)
